The Thanksgiving holiday just got a little bit easier for 35 military families in the greater Portland area.
On Wednesday morning, the families were invited to the Tigard office of Operation Homefront for a “surprise” — but they were not told what it would be. Upon arriving, they were led into the warehouse, where rows of large paper bags filled with Thanksgiving dinner supplies were waiting for them.
“I thought it was just going to be a toy drive or something, I don’t know,” said Sgt. Brady Jones, a Wilsonville resident who serves in the Oregon National Guard and brought his children to Wednesday’s event. “This is pretty cool.”
Jones added, “I’m doing all the cooking for these guys. Luckily, I’ve got family nearby, so we weren’t totally left in the dust.”
U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Monique Beck, who came in uniform with her family, said, “We were surprised. We had no idea what to expect.”
The donation of the food was made by Amazon Prime Now, an online retailer that provides two-hour delivery of basic household goods from local stores (and one-hour delivery of restaurant orders).
